    For the past several years I have been a member of the local peace group, Pacem in Terris.  One outgrowth of membership and action with the group was my recent political campaign.  The driving force for political action was then and remains today my staunch opposition to the ongoing occupation of Iraq.  Our nation has many issues to be resolved today.  We will not be able to address many of those issues so long as we continue to borrow and spend $10 billion a month in Iraq.

    On the eve of September 11, I was haunted by the heartache I have felt for seven very long years.  On the night, before the anniversary of the horrendous attacks, I was reminded of the people gone and not forgotten.  I also thought of those who survived.  Time has not healed the wound inflicted on that infamous day, now commonly called 9/11.  Indeed, with each passing minute and hour the hurt I feel intensifies.

    MoveOn.org presents this production with a desire to seek donations.  This self-proclaimed "Progressive" organization hopes to advance the Democratic candidate, and look for dollars to do so.  In essence, MoveOn would wish the public to think that if we advocate for Barack Obama then the Party platform will be fulfilled.  As one who does not necessarily see these two entities as equivalent, I offer this audio-visual presentation more as a tool to inform than a request for a contribution.

    Wars Will Win

    "Like Hope, but different."

    Three words inspire us all.  There are "Gonna be wars," and yes, we are going to "Bomb, bomb Iran."  As every inhabitant of the globe knows, "withdraw [from Iraq or Afghanistan] means chaos."  If Americans and citizens around the world think things are bad now, you ain't "seen nothin' yet." "It, [this war and that one] was ugly."  However, each of us can be assured the combat will continue.  Engagement may be impossible to escape.  The fight may flourish for "maybe a hundred" years.  As Presidential hopeful so eloquent stated, that is "fine with me."  However, a perpetual war is not satisfactory for those who advocate for peace.

    I truly began to understand the nature of the "liberation" that the U.S. military was bringing to Iraq after one particular mission-one that I struggle with everyday, and one that I share with a great deal of shame and regret.

    Woodstock; War and Peace Revisited

    It was summer.  Temperatures were high and war was in the air.  People said they were upset with politicians who refused to heed the cries for peace.  Battlefields far from home became burial grounds.  The public noted too many people had died, perhaps unnecessarily.  Americans publicly announced, its time to bring our young home.  End the combat was the common cry.  Yet, it seemed the Administration did not intend to declare a cease-fire.  Some feared a superpower might appear weak.  A pullout would indicate that we had surrendered.  As Americans safe at home pondered policy, soldiers still fell on foreign fields.  Families struggled to come to terms with what it means to be a patriot.  Moms and Dads of military personnel may have wrestled with the idea of what it means to win a war more so than the average American did.  The year was 1969.

    An Open Letter to Barack Obama on Iran

    by: Betsy L. Angert

    Fri Jul 04, 2008 at 08:00:00 AM EDT

    On this the day, the Fourth of July, we celebrate our own Independence.  Citizens revel in our love of freedom and tranquility.  Today, may we take a moment to reflect upon how an unwarranted, or unnecessary war might have a profound effect on our lives and those of all mankind throughout the globe.

    I offer a correspondence intended for the person we hope will be our next President, Senator Barack Obama.  Please ponder the possibilities, and if you choose, I invite you to add your signature. You fellow Americans appreciate your consideration.

    By Many Authors

    Dear Senator Obama . . .

    We the undersigned may have different views on U.S. foreign policy with respect to Iran. We all, however, are deeply concerned about the stories in the press in the past few weeks suggesting that the Bush administration might be considering a military strike on Iran, that it might give a green light to such an attack by Israel, or that it might engage in other acts of war, such as imposing a blockade against Iran.

    We welcomed your stand against the war on Iraq in 2002. And we were encouraged by your early campaign statements emphasizing diplomacy over military action against Iran. Today, you have an opportunity to forestall a repeat of the tragic Iraq war. We hope you will use that opportunity.

    We agree with the conclusion of Muhammed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, that "A military strike ... would be worse than anything possible. It would turn the region into a fireball..." A military attack, he said, "will mean that Iran, if it is not already making nuclear weapons, will launch a crash course to build nuclear weapons with the blessing of all Iranians, even those in the West." (Reuters, June 20, 2008.)

    We don't know, of course, whether an attack on Iran is in fact being considered, or if there are serious plans to initiate other acts of war, such as a blockade of the country. But we call on you to issue a public statement warning of the grave dangers that any of these actions would entail, and pointing out how inappropriate and undemocratic it would be for the Bush administration to undertake them, or encourage Israel to do so, in its closing months in office.

    An attack on Iran would violate the UN Charter's prohibition against the use or threat of force and the Congress's authority to declare war. Moreover, the public right to decide should not be foreclosed by last-minute actions of the Bush administration, which will set U.S. policy in stone now.

    We were heartened by your earlier comments suggesting that an Obama administration would act on the understanding that genuine security requires a willingness to talk without preconditions (something Iran has offered several times to no avail), and that threats and military action are counterproductive. We hope you will follow through on these commitments once in office, but also that you will speak out now against any acts of war by the Bush administration.

    War; What Is It Good For?

    by: Betsy L. Angert

    WAR - What Is It Good For

    copyright © 2008 Betsy L. Angert.

    America is at war.  Yet, each day we, in the United States, awaken.  An alarm may cause us to arise.  Perhaps, we stir when we have had enough sleep.  A few of us chose to begin the day at the hour we do, for there is much to be done.  Rarely, does a gun shot rouse us.  Bombs and bullets do not whiz past our head throughout the night.  Nor do we worry that shrapnel may hit us during the day.  In America, for the most part, people feel safe.  Life is sane.

    Granted, there is stress.  Fuel prices are high.  We must work to put food on the table.  The cost of commodities increases.  Daily doings can take a physical and emotional toll.  Nonetheless, most of us in the States are assured tomorrow will come.

    Our mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters will not be lost in an exchange of gunfire just outside the door.  Military men and women will not enter our homes and strip us of our rights.  Enemies do not carry machine guns, at least not openly.

    In America, the persons in our neighborhood who we look upon as foe, may have once been our friends.  Grudges are frequently personal if you are a citizen in the  United States.  Political disputes do not draw blood.  Most who fight in this Northwestern hemisphere do not do so to the death.  People in America do not constantly consider the consequences of what they have created, war in the Middle East.

    Mother's Day of Peace

    by: Betsy L. Angert

    Mon May 05, 2008 at 11:00:00 AM EDT

    Mother's Day for Peace

    copyright © 2008 Betsy L. Angert

    As Mother's Day approaches Moms throughout this country cry.  Many parents cannot be physically close to their sons or daughters.  Telephone calls will not come.  Children may desperately wish to speak with mother; however, when "in country," on the battle field, a conversation with Mommy is not possible.

    Some guardians are quite near to their children.  Perhaps, they hold on more tightly, for the caregiver knows the tot has no other parent to turn to.  So many American lads and lasses have one parent in Iraq, in Afghanistan, somewhere far, far, far away from home.  Our troops hearts may be with toddlers and teens left behind in the States.  Yet, the hands of a service Mom or Dad are often nowhere to be seen or felt by their babies.  The children of military men and women clutch photographs, and dream of the day when Mom or Dad will return home.

    In the Middle East, young and old also mourn.  Many Moms, Dads, sons, and daughters do not have family to cuddle with.  Celebrations are reminders of loss.  In a war-torn nation, countless are orphaned.  Males and females are frequently widowed.  People live and then violently, they pass.

    Andrea Gibson - For Eli, For Us All

    by: Betsy L. Angert

    Andrea Gibson - For Eli

    copyright © 2008 Betsy L. Angert

    There are no words to express the effect of the author's empathy.  The verse fills a heart and a mind.  As Andrea Gibson and we reflect upon the horrors of war, we realize.  The soul slips away when the public endorses hostilities.  Peace is not a prospect when bullets blaze through the air.

    How might the skies in America be blue, when those in this nation have soiled the heavens in Iraq and Afghanistan?

    What might citizens who reside in this country believe when in the name of freedom and justice, we intentionally inflict cruelty on others.

    Americans kill and claim to be in the right.

    Throughout the United States people say "Support the troops."  Yet, we physically, emotionally, and spiritually murder those who only wish only to protect us.  We slaughter individuals whose names we never knew and whose faces we never saw.  Children are put to death.  Parents are executed.  Innocent people who caused us no pain are labeled enemies.

    As a nation we profess to do good. However, when we as a people choose combat, we do much harm.

    Please ponder the poem . . .

    Endless war on the installment plan

    copyright © 2008 Betsy L. Angert

    Many Americans may wish to believe that if Arizona Senator John McCain were elected, he would ensure that this nation remains engaged in battle for eons.  The conventional wisdom is Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton will "bring the troops home."  Citizens, mostly Independents and Democrats, may blame the Republicans for conflicts that seem endless by design.  Of course, when war is in question, countless Americans contemplate the current conflicts.  Nearly everyone with some exceptions, places the onus on President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, or any of the other Neoconservatives in the Cabinet.  Yet, these individuals and groups are not the only creators of combat.  Any man or woman who believes, at times, war is the best, last, or the only option is culpable.  Citizens throughout the globe have accepted the notion wars will always be.  Hence fighting is, forever.

    Reverend Martin Luther King, Pastor Jeremiah Wright, Edward Peck; Fierce Urgency of Now

    He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.
    He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

    ~ Martin Luther King, Junior

    Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
    ~ Martin Luther King, Junior.

    Days from now America will commemorate an anniversary.  On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Junior was brutally assassinated.  Citizens will recall the wisdom of a man who lived for peace and yet, fell victim to violence.  Homage will be bestowed.  The American people will praise the preacher, the teacher, and the man who taught us all to speak of what remained tacit for too long.  In the United States of America, all men are not equal.  As a country, we do not treat people well.  Nor do government officials lead us to the promised light of world harmony.

    In the first 90 days of 2008 the United States reports 103 troop deaths in Iraq.  Since the invasion we have commemorated the 5th anniversary we have commemorated 5 years and more than 4000 soldiers lost.  Today we hear of costs near $12 billion per month and estimates of $3 trillion overall before all is said and done.

    Meanwhile our mainstream media continues to play down the ongoing failure with barely a mention any more of the deaths let alone stories of the families and friends left behind.  The death count also fails to reflect the numbers of US contractors killed in country.  No mention is made of the many thousands of life altering injuries such as limbs or eyes lost.  Nor do we hear much of the many minds broken beyond repair.  Suicides related to service time are also not counted and often not mentioned.  Coalition losses are not counted in the total.  The Iraqi losses count many thousands more, yet those are dismissed often without a thought.  Every death rends the fabric of humanity a bit more.

    A mail entered my electronic inbox.  The title was "Five years later in Iraq."  As the anniversary of American led attacks in the Middle East approached, and passed, many messages referenced the subject.  The correspondence from Cathy struck me.  This communication was a personal plea.  As the mother of a former American soldier, Cathy shared her sorrow.  She spoke of hope, and told readers of her son.  Cathy, Mom, also mentioned why she would support Barack Obama in 2008.

    Where Have All The Flowers Gone? - Peter, Paul and Mary

    copyright © 2008 Betsy L. Angert

    To everything there is a season,
    and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

    A time to be born, and a time to die;
    a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
    A time to kill, and a time to heal;
    a time to break down, and a time to build up;

    A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
    a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
    A time to cast away stones,
    and a time to gather stones together;
    a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
    A time to get, and a time to lose;
    a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

    A time to rend, and a time to sew;
    a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
    A time to love, and a time to hate;
    a time of war, and a time of peace.

    ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

    They say life is cyclical.  Peace prospers in a era.  Epochs are filled with tales of war.  Currently, in the United States, this is the political season.  Issues are the topic of import.  While at times, it seems rumors rule during the ritual run for the presidency, mostly, people want to speak of what affects their everyday life.  Some say, "It is the economy, stu***."  Others declare military defense and homeland security are the subjects we must speak about.  A few say, we must secure our boarders.  This theme ties the two aforementioned together.  Jobs and terrorism are the greatest concern.  Then there are those who inquire, "What happened to talk of the Iraq war?"
