    Peace, Justice, and Prosperity

For most of my life I have been a dreamer.  As a child I sat many a fine hour on a creek bank with a cork floating on the water (often with no bait on the hook) and dreamed of other times and other places.  In those years science fiction was a staple of reading.  Television was young and barely available.  Entertainment was found by one's self or not found at all for the most part.

In years past I dreamed of a better life for myself and my family.  In those days the dream was more about myself than for other people.  As life has continued in time the dream has come to encompass the people around me and now extends to the nation and around the entire globe.  Today I dream of a world in which peace, justice, and prosperity are the rule of the day.

Guest Author :: Peace, Justice, and Prosperity
Most of all I dream of a United States President who works to insure our nation benefits from the principles of peace, justice, and prosperity.  The dream includes a President who brings our troops home from our occupation zones around the world before more damage is done on either side of the affair.  The dream holds an administration focused on diplomacy using carrots instead of sticks to deal with foreign nations.

The dream means a world in which peace is a primary objective to be sought far ahead of any thought of belligerence or of military operations.  In my dream the world's military forces are maintained at low levels in peacetime status.  The forces are prepared to defend their individual nation from outside attack, but are not used to invade or to occupy any nation without being attacked first.

I dream of a world in which justice reigns as a supreme rule for all people no matter their sex, age, skin color, or nationality.  Every person in my dream is treated fairly according the same rules as every other.  In the world of my dreams all have an equal chance at finding success and happiness in their own fashion.  There are no special rewards accorded the rich and the powerful beyond those of just treatment.  Education and health care are given freely to one and all as a benefit of society and to benefit in return the society.  A nation that holds an educated and healthy citizenry will be a more prosperous country at the end of the day.

Prosperity rules in my dream as all peoples of all nations work to the betterment of the entire globe.  In the absence of massive military expenditures to drain national economies, investments are made in basic research, in infrastructure such as highways and public buildings, and in education.  Factories produce goods that people with good jobs can buy.  And the capitalist circle continues to the benefit of all.

Is this too much for which to dream?  I think not.  Every day we hear news of the failures in our nation and in our world at large.  There are more than enough reports of crime to go around these days.  The housing market is slumping.  The financial markets suffer.  News of war zones and various areas of armed conflict around the globe are terrible.  Global warming increases day by day as the environment is affected by the actions of humankind and the natural forces of our globe.

When ever will this situation end?  Can my dream of peace, justice, and prosperity come to fruition one day?  I submit the dream is much more than the meanderings of a simple mind unable to face reality.  Leaders with great visions and dreams of a better future exist in our country today.  The trick is to find those people and to see to their election at every level in our nation.

We need leaders who not only espouse great dreams but who have solutions to the issues facing us today.  Any person can find fault and point out the problems.  The real trick is finding solutions.  We need leaders who surround themselves with problem solvers.  We need people with the ability to see a problem and to find a variety of solutions to the issue.  Then we need a leader who can sort through the various solutions to find the one way to best face and correct the problems.

We need our dreamers in the world today, and no, I am not talking about any one political candidate of the day, but speaking in general to one and all.  In particular I speak to the voting public at large.  We each and every one must take action every day to see to solutions.  We must cease our bickering and begin to work together to make the best solutions become reality.  We have no more time to complain about what is not happening.  We must move to make progress on all fronts.

Together we can move a nation.  We must hold to that dream of a finer place one day.  Those who let go their dreams lose all hope.  We who dream must share our hopes and our ambitions and our dreams that others, too, may find the right to dream.  We stand together or we fall apart.  We are after all in this together.

By touching one heart, one mind at a time we can begin to make the differences that will shape our world for generations to come.  It is only by failing to take action and failing to share our dreams that we insure the status quo.

Reminder for one and all.  I am running for Congress, DE-01.  Please check out the website or the ActBlue page and support the effort.  Your help is needed for the effort to succeed.  Contributions of all sorts, both moral and monetary are most appreciated.

dreams come true. it can happen to we (10.00 / 1)
    Dear Jerry . . .

Just this morning I heard of ten point plans and the need for these.  I truly believe we cannot limit ourselves to a simple strategy or a single person as the solution.  Life is fluid and if we find ourselves immersed in fact and figures than we miss what truly occurs.

Consider a dream, those we have in the day or night.  If we  allow our thoughts to authentically flow, as nature intended, we realize much seems random.  Life is complex.  Any crisis cannot be understood completely.  If humans would work to consider every element, they might not be so entrenched that the forest is confused for the trees.

I too am a dreamer.  Since my youth I have thought myself Don Quixote.  I may flail at windmills, ahh, but the breeze.  It is all so beautiful.

    Solutions are the key. (0.00 / 0)
I have been pondering this thought for a few days and hope to expound soon.  So many people today stand around pointing at the problems (seeing the forest and missing the trees).  That is the easy part.  The tough part is finding solutions and applying those answers to the problem at hand.

If we but take a few moments to solve some bit of the problem we are making a difference.  No one person can know all the solutions but as a collective we have the ability to solve giant problems in this world today.

The key is working together.  We need leaders who surround themselves with problem solvers.  We do not need "leaders" who lead by pushing.  We need leadership with flexibility and strength.  Real leaders are able to see when a new direction is need and have the strength to stay the course in the face of opposition.  Real leaders are not blind to ideas outside their individual realm.  Real leaders inspire others to offer possible solutions so all may see the ideas and from the stew may come a real answer.

    Peace.

This portion makes sense to me.  I do not believe anyone needs push or that there are "real" answers.  Life is fluid.  Hence, for me, I think if we honor principles, we will remain open to what may be, in the moment, and what may not be in the next.  I trust the only absolutes are love and peace.

Principles are the building blocks of the foundation of life. (10.00 / 1)
If we find the right principles and stick to that course without veering we will find a better life.  The trouble today is so many have found some measure of comfort in the wrong principles.  We must stick to the ways that benefit all and not just the one.

    Dear Jerry and Betty (10.50 / 2)
    Dear Jerry . . .

I thought you might enjoy this.  For me, it relates to your essay.  I love the read.

To be good citizens, Americans must do more
    St. Petersburg Times
    By Bob Graham
    March 3, 2008

Former University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins famously remarked that "the death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush" but rather "a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment."

The current hype surrounding the 2008 presidential contest makes American democracy seem healthy. But the superficial glitz of the campaign only provides empty calories. At a much deeper level, basic citizenship - our personal commitment to engaging the democratic process - is starving for sustenance.

The numbers tell the story. In the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress in Civics (2006), 70 percent of U.S. eighth-graders could not identify why the Declaration of Independence was written. Seventy-seven percent of high school seniors tested could not describe two methods a citizen might use to change the law.

Florida also receives failing marks. In 2005, a statewide Florida Bar survey revealed that more than 40 percent of Florida citizens could not correctly identify the three branches of government. This lack of knowledge has metastasized into lack of action. Among the 50 states, Florida was 39th in average voter turnout in the 2004 general election. We are a woeful 49th in volunteerism.

The precarious position of American citizenship has many fathers . . .

Betty, if you see this comment, please read the full text.  I think the specifics and the plans may be of interest to you as well.   I wish I was closer to the Bob Graham Center.

That comment is right on!! (6.00 / 1)
a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment
is the explanation for much of the wrong in our nation today.  My wife and I were speaking to a different context just a day or two ago, but the sense is the same.  Much of our society today is failing from apathy.  Everyone seems to think someone else will see the job gets done.  Too many forget what life has given each of us these days.

We each and every one owe our nation a bit of our time and energy.  If we all give back in proportion to what we are given we can rebuild a nation.  We can grow together for a change instead of falling apart.

Thanks, Betsy.  That is a wonderful quote.  Peace.

circumstances of Americans are complex (10.00 / 1)
    Dear Jerry . . .

I am glad you enjoyed the article.  I saved it.  It is full of quotables.  I only wish I could attend some of the events.

Everyone seems to think someone else will see the job gets done.  Too many forget what life has given each of us these days.

I agree and do not.  I think the circumstances of Americans are more complex.  I do not believe people are ungrateful or think someone else will do the job.  My conversations with many tell me people think themselves powerless.  They are drowning and see no lifesavers. [Although yesterday when I spoke with a woman in Ohio, she said Dennis Kucinich has long been the lifesaver in her area.]

The person who shared the article with me responded to my thanks.  Her thoughts took me to more.  Those reflections seem to relate to your observation.  I  share . . .

Only hours ago I met a woman who said she just did not have time to research the candidates [or the issues].  She recounted what she read through slam electronic mails or heard in advertisements.

We were at a city pool.  I swim for my health.  She brought her child for classes.  Why could she not or why would she not choose to read while the little one swam during an hour lesson?  I did not ask.

She answered without prompting.  The woman is not interested in national or world events.  Politics and the process are not real or relevant to her . . . or so, I think, the culture leads her to believe.  Few realize their power.

Today, a good friend of mine who works for a company that facilitates learning in private and religious schools, mostly in very poor neighborhoods, met with associates who work with a Congressman.  The persons on the Hill showed little concern for the programs that benefit the impoverished or these institutions.  The Progressive Democratic State Representative they work for sends his children to private school in a very affluent area.

Politics is personal and people believe the propaganda.

On advertising and the selling of a candidate, I offer . . .
Fear Factor; The Telephone Rings in the White House?

Presidential Candidates and the People; Politics is Personal

May life bring you peace, prosperity, and pleasant dreams being better as you live . . .

All politics is local and personal (11.00 / 1)
and yet so many are so ill informed.  I am amazed every day at how few people understand the structure of our government.  Or voting.  What is wrong with this picture?

People today feel powerless because the system tells them that is true.  One person may be powerless to make large changes, but the idea is none of us is powerless to make small differences every day.  We must not lose sight of the day to day parts of our lives.  We can look at the bigger picture, but people need reminders of the daily effect of national politics in their lives.  Maybe if they begin to see those smaller effects they will take more interest and more action.

    Peace.

    Great article... (10.50 / 2)
Thank you Betsy for the link to the article. I read it from start to finish and passed it along to others.
It speaks to many things I observe; however, apathy is not exactly how I see it. It is certainly in the mix, but not the only thing. I see disconnect, sleepiness, and many who are just busy trying to keep their head above water.

Americans are asked to do more......what are those things?

the sad State of our Union (10.00 / 1)
    Dear Betty . . .

I thought this treatise would resonate with you.  Bob Graham gives me hope for Florida.  Much of what I have meant to write to our Governor is contained in this tome.  More is not.  One day I must inscribe my prescription for Florida.  Education and quality of life for me are far more important than tourism and entertainment.  I do not think our economy can count on local gambling to generate income.

I see disconnect, sleepiness, and many who are just busy trying to keep their head above water.

Americans are asked to do more......what are those things?

I agree.  Americans are lost, financially in debt and emotionally drained.  People are stressed, depressed, and looking for life in all the sorts of unhealthy places.  All that is takes a toll.  Few are in good health, physically, mentally, emotionally . . . this is the sad State of our Union.
