    It's the war economy, stupids

I understand that deregulation, greed, and mismanagement are major factors in the current economic crisis.  But why are so few of the "experts" talking about a war, fought on credit, that's already cost hundreds of billions - and that some believe will have a total economic impact of more than $3 TRILLION?  It's insane.  This week's toon, "Dollar Wise," (Archive 0833) pokes at that question.

    Till next week,
    Andrew

    Dearest Andrew . . .

I just spent more than an hour in search of the total debt.  I have read in many missives the number is 53 trillion.  Yet, try to find the full accounts payable amount in Federal files and realize the information offered is oblique.  The Administration speaks of transparency and acts on obfuscation.

Please take a moment to read the national ledgers.

If family budgets were kept as the national record books are, I trust we all would be bankrupt.  Might Mom  hide purchases from Dad?  Does Father spend more than he brings in?  Could it be that each earns less than they tell the other they do?  Perchance, the pair borrows from India and China;.  The two might use loans to avoid a war.  The United States government instead buys bullets on credit.
