    Tough to take for Hillary

Sarah Palin must be the final insult to poor Hillary.  To be so close to breaking the ultimate glass ceiling, and to feel you were mistreated by the media, and then to see some gun-tottin', Bible-thumpin' hottie hockey mom, with even less experience than that punk you were supposed to have crushed, strut in using a ready-made "the media is sexist" defense.  Every time Palin evokes her name on the campaign trail, Hillary must die a thousand deaths.

When I first sketched this toon, I had Hillary saying something like "What have I begot?"  But as I was looking at it on the art board, the final caption wrote itself.  It's the unspoken word that's been in the background this entire whole campaign (and notice that it's still unspoken).  It seemed pretty obvious that's "What Hillary Must Be Thinking."  (Archive 0831)

That's all for this week.  Back in seven.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Two toons honor at Homer Davenport event

In other news, one of my editorial cartoons, "Stimulating a War Economy," (Archive 0817) took top honors at this year's Homer Davenport International Cartoon Contest.  The event is part of the annual Homer Davenport Days festival in Silverton, Ore.  Another of my toons, "The Numbers Game" (Archive 0813b) (color version), took third.  It was a small competition - 13 artists competed - but I'm still pretty tickled.

I've reprinted the cartoons below, or you can check them out at the Homer Davenport Days Web site.

    Dearest Andrew . . .

The talk has begun.  Now the nation laughs aloud as they discuss what Hillary might think.  Perchance, those Live, in New York saw your toon and were inspired to chatter.
"Saturday Night Live" kicked off its 34th season last night with a "nonpartisan message" from Sen. Hillary Clinton (SNL regular Amy Poehler) and Gov. Sarah Palin (guest Tina Fey).

As the two stood behind a lectern, flanked by American flags, "Palin" said they were "crossing party lines" for this unexpected joint appearance "to address the now very ugly role that sexism is playing in the campaign ..."

"... an issue which I am frankly surprised to hear people suddenly care about," interjected "Clinton."
And it got better from there.

"PALIN":  "You know, Hillary and I don't agree on everything ..."

"CLINTON" (OVERLAPPING): "Anything. I believe that diplomacy should be the cornerstone of any foreign policy."

"PALIN": "And I can see Russia from my house."

"CLINTON": "I believe global warming is caused by man."

"PALIN": "And I believe it's just God hugging us closer."

"CLINTON": "I don't agree with the Bush Doctrine."

"PALIN": "I don't know what that is."

Andrew, you may also find Sarah Palin's thoughts on the topic of Hillary Clinton fascinating.
Palin: Obama regrets not picking Hillary
    By Jimmy Orr
    Christian Science Monitor
    September 13, 2008

In the much-discussed series of interviews Sarah Palin had as Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin was asked by ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson if Democratic nominee Barack Obama should have selected Hillary Clinton as his running mate as opposed to Joe Biden.

"I think he's regrettin' not picking her now, I do," Palin answered as a train whistle sounded in the Alaskan outdoors. "What, what determination and grit and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way - she handled those well."

This wasn't the first time she discussed Senator Clinton or sexism on the campaign trail. Back in March, Newsweek asked Palin about Clinton's media coverage and whether she received fair media coverage in the primaries.

"Fair or unfair-and I do think that it's a more concentrated criticism that Hillary gets on so many fronts; I think that's unfortunate," Palin said. "But fair or unfair, I think she does herself a disservice to even mention it, really. You have to plow through that and know what you're getting into. I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton and to her experience and to her passion for changing the status quo."

    Neanderthals
In that interview, Palin acknowledged the double-standard she encountered when campaigning for governor, calling those who wondered if she could do her job and have children "Neanderthals."

Hillary also offered a few choice words.  While many note her lackluster enthusiasm on the Obama Biden campaign trail, the former First Lady argues . . .
Hillary Clinton: 'Happy to Campaign for Barack and Joe'

    Rick Klein

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Weighing in on Gov. Sarah Palin's impact on the presidential race, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton says in an interview to be broadcast Tuesday 7 a.m. EST on Good Morning America that she has full confidence in Sen. Joe Biden as Sen. Barack Obama's running mate, praising his knowledge of the economy and world affairs.

Asked to respond to Palin's assertion that she thinks Obama is "regretting not picking [Clinton] now" -- with many former Clinton supporters now saying they will support the McCain-Palin ticket -- Clinton demurred, saying she's excited to campaign for Obama and Biden.
